Dog hind leg weakness has three very different root causes, and the exam room clues that separate them matter more than the symptom itself.

A nine-year-old Labrador mix named Otis used to clear the porch steps in one bound. His owner noticed, over maybe three weeks, that he started pausing at the bottom step, weight shifted forward, back end sagging slightly before he committed to the climb. No yelp, no obvious pain response when she pressed along his spine or flexed his hips. He still wanted to go on walks. He just could not quite trust his back end the way he used to. That description alone is not enough to tell you what is wrong with Otis, and that is the point: hind leg weakness is a sign your dog’s body is producing, not a diagnosis your dog has.

The Checklist Before You Call

Before you search further, write down what you are actually seeing. This is the information that changes how urgently your vet needs to see your dog and what they will look for first.

  • Onset speed — did this build over weeks, or did it happen over hours?
  • Pain signs — yelping, guarding, reluctance to be touched along the back or hips, versus no apparent discomfort at all
  • Symmetry — both hind legs equally affected, or one worse than the other
  • Paw placement — is your dog knuckling over on the top of a paw without correcting it
  • Bladder and bowel control — any accidents, straining, or dribbling
  • Sensation — can your dog feel a gentle pinch between the toes
  • General condition — appetite, weight, energy, any recent vomiting or pale gums

Why the Hind End Goes First

There is a mechanical reason hind legs tend to fail before front legs, and it is not coincidence. Dogs carry roughly 60 percent of their body weight on the front end, which means the hips, stifles, and lumbar spine are working with a smaller margin before wear or compression becomes symptomatic. It also means that several unrelated pathways converge on the same visible symptom. Degenerative joint disease in the hips or knees limits weight-bearing through pain and mechanical restriction. Spinal cord compression, most often from a herniated disc, interrupts the nerve signal that tells the hind legs where they are in space and how hard to push. A slow-burning neurodegenerative process, degenerative myelopathy being the best-characterized example, erodes the same signaling pathway without the pain component at all. That progression can unfold over days, not months, which is why sudden-onset weakness gets treated as urgent rather than something to monitor for a week.

Degenerative myelopathy is the quiet outlier. It is a progressive, adult-onset spinal cord disease, and unlike disc disease it does not typically cause pain even as hind limb function declines. A DNA test for the associated SOD1.118G>A variant exists, and per the AKC Canine Health Foundation, it identifies dogs as clear, carriers, or at genetic risk — but a risk result is not the same as an active diagnosis, and plenty of at-risk dogs never develop clinical signs. I want to be direct about that distinction because I see owners conflate the two more than almost any other genetic test result in my field.

A second scene is worth holding onto here, because the difference between these conditions is easiest to see side by side. Picture two dogs in the same waiting room. One, a stocky Rottweiler, refuses to sit fully, groans getting onto the exam table, and flinches when his hips are extended — that is a pain response, and it points the workup toward imaging and inflammation. The other, a lean German Shepherd, sits and stands without complaint but drags the top of one hind paw just slightly on turns, worn fur visible over the nail. No wincing at all. That dog’s problem almost certainly is not in the hip. It is in the wiring, and the workup goes toward the spine and, eventually, possibly toward genetic testing.
