How to Exercise a Three-Legged Dog
A three-legged dog isn't fragile, but the exercise plan has to protect three joints doing the work of four.
The first tripod dog I worked with in any depth was a fifty-five-pound German Shepherd mix named Duke, eleven months out from a forelimb amputation after a bone tumor. His owner brought him in not because he was struggling, but because he was thriving — barreling down the hallway, skidding on the tile, jumping onto the couch off his remaining front leg. She wanted to know if she was supposed to be stopping him. That question comes up more than almost any other in this population: not “can he still be active” but “how much is too much, and on which joint.”
Checklist for building a tripod exercise plan:
- Confirm which limb was lost (front vs. rear changes the load pattern entirely)
- Start with short, frequent leash walks on non-slip surfaces before adding distance
- Delay jumping, stairs, and off-leash sprinting until the remaining limbs are conditioned
- Watch the contralateral limb and spine for early signs of overload
- Keep the dog lean — every extra pound is disproportionately costly on three legs

Why the missing limb changes the math. A dog with three legs isn’t just “getting by” — the remaining limbs, and especially the diagonal limb and the spine, absorb weight and shock that used to be spread across four points of contact.
