  • Plain turkey meat, no skin, no gravy — fine in small amounts
  • Plain cooked sweet potato or pumpkin — genuinely useful, not just tolerated

  • Anything with onion, garlic, or shallot — off the table, full stop
  • Grapes or raisins, in any form — off the table, full stop

That list is the practical shortcut. Where the actual risk concentrates

The generations-of-dogs argument also survives on selection bias — nobody remembers the dogs that got sick, only the ones that didn’t. An edge case that changes the calculus

For that dog, “plain turkey in small amounts” isn’t automatically safe the way it would be for a healthy 60-pound Labrador — the fat and protein load that’s trivial for one dog can be a meaningful percentage of daily caloric and fat intake for the other, and a supplement or medication schedule built around a stable baseline diet can be thrown off by even modest treat additions. I don’t give this dog the same green light I’d give a large, healthy adult. The size and health-status adjustment matters more than the specific food in these cases, which is worth remembering before applying any general holiday-food list uniformly across every dog in the house.
